Taking Charge of TMDLs

E Sciences is currently working with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and EAC Consulting to develop a Basin Management Plan for the North Fork of the New River in support of the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Program.

The North Fork of the New River is one of three distinct basins which comprise the historical New River in Broward County, Florida (the other two being the South Fork and the main New River). Of these three basins, the North Fork alone remains in its original, natural state with a large area of natural shoreline. This 3.5-mile shallow tributary extends through the northwest section of Fort Lauderdale and connects to the C-12 Canal parallel to Sunrise Boulevard.

Working with this complex system requires local knowledge and experience, as any action taken to protect water quality upstream may have unforeseen consequence downstream.  E Sciences has coordinated with key stakeholders (city/county officials and environmental experts) and drafted key tasks of the Basin Management Plan, which summarizes efforts taken by stakeholders and local organizations to reduce pollutant levels in the river.  This document will consolidate restoration efforts that have been completed, are currently underway or are planned for the near future, to serve as reasonable assurance that the river system is on its way to restoration and compliance with state standards.

Knowledge of stormwater management plans, ecology of fresh and marine waters, wetland ecology, ecosystem ecology, water supply planning, surface water hydrology, hydrogeology, and water quality analysis are used in determining pollutants and allocations among sources for this river system. Tasks have included outfall monitoring and collecting GPS data by navigating the river via boat and on foot, creating outfall maps, report writing, water quality modeling, and deriving pollutant loading among identified sources.
