Biosparge System Cleans Soil at Orange County Fire Station
E Sciences recently designed and supervised the installation one of the longest horizontal biosparge system ever installed in Florida.
The sparging system injects air through a series of underground pipes to remove hazardous contaminants from soil and groundwater. The system was installed at the site of a former underground fuel storage tank at O.C. Fire Station 20, located in Apopka. The system, which is over 1,000 feet long, pumps over 400 cubic feet of air per second through the contaminated soil and groundwater.
Senior Geologist Steve Cook, who was involved in the system’s design and startup, said the remediation process will remain operational until the contaminants in the soil and groundwater are reduced to levels that are safely below state-mandated thresholds. At that time, a natural attenuation monitoring plan will be conducted for one year to ensure that contaminants remain below cleanup levels.
The project was completed for Orange County, Florida, in partnership with Stillwater Technologies.
